Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of life's most meaningful milestones, and those first few days seem to pass in the blink of an eye. Between the excitement of meeting your little one, the tiny details you never want to forget, and settling into an entirely new routine, there are so many moments worth preserving.
If you've started looking into newborn photography, you've probably come across two different types of sessions: Fresh 48 and traditional newborn photography. While both focus on documenting your newest addition, they capture two very different stages of your growing family's story. So, what's the difference? When should you schedule each session? And do you really need both? Let's break down what makes each experience special so you can decide which one is the best fit for your family!
What Is a Fresh 48 Session?
A Fresh 48 session is a photography session that takes place within approximately the first 48 hours after your baby is born, typically while you're still at the hospital or birthing center.
Unlike traditional newborn photography, Fresh 48 sessions focus on documenting the earliest moments of your baby's life in a natural, storytelling style. These sessions aren't about elaborate setups, props, or perfectly posed photographs. They're about capturing your family exactly as you are during those first hours together. Think tiny fingers wrapped around yours, hospital bracelets, the little hospital bassinet, your baby's first expressions, and the overwhelming joy of finally holding the person you've waited so long to meet. Fresh 48 sessions can also include meaningful interactions with your partner, siblings, or other loved ones, depending on your preferences and the hospital's visitation policies.
One of my favorite things about this type of photography is how beautifully it preserves the details that change almost immediately. Your baby will never be quite as tiny as they are in those first hours, and these photographs allow you to revisit a chapter that can otherwise feel like a blur.
Best for: Families who want to preserve the earliest hours of their baby's life, including the little details and genuine emotions surrounding their arrival.
What Is a Newborn Photography Session?
A newborn photography session typically takes place during the first few weeks after your baby is born, although the timing can vary depending on the photographer's approach and your family's needs. While Fresh 48 sessions document those first hours, newborn sessions give your family an opportunity to capture life with your newest addition after you've had a little time to settle in. Newborn photography can take several forms. Some photographers specialize in studio sessions with carefully posed babies, wraps, and props, while others focus on a more natural, lifestyle approach.
At 31:13 Photography, I love the intimacy of in-home newborn sessions. There's something incredibly meaningful about photographing your family in the place where you're beginning this new chapter together. These sessions may include photographs of your baby resting in your arms, snuggling with siblings, lying safely in their crib, or simply being loved on by the people who mean the most to them. Rather than focusing on perfect poses, lifestyle newborn photography celebrates the connection between your family members and the everyday moments that make this season so special.
Best for: Families who want relaxed, meaningful photographs of their newborn and the connections they're building together at home.
Fresh 48 vs. Newborn Photography: The Biggest Differences
While both sessions celebrate the arrival of your baby, they capture two very different stages of your family's story. The biggest differences come down to timing, location, and the moments being documented.
Timing: Fresh 48 sessions typically take place within the first 48 hours after your baby is born, while newborn sessions are generally scheduled during the first few weeks of your baby's life.
Location: Fresh 48 sessions usually take place at the hospital or birthing center, where those first moments are unfolding. Newborn sessions may take place in a studio or the comfort of your own home, depending on your photographer's style.
Photography Style: Fresh 48 photography takes a more natural, documentary approach, focusing on genuine interactions and the little details of your baby's arrival. Newborn photography can be more traditionally posed or lifestyle-focused, capturing your baby and family in a relaxed environment.
Overall Experience: Fresh 48 sessions preserve the emotions and details of those first hours, while newborn sessions allow you to document your family after you've had a little time to settle into life together.
Neither session is necessarily better than the other. They simply tell different parts of the same story, and both offer memories worth preserving.
Do You Need Both Fresh 48 and Newborn Photos?
This is one of my favorite questions because the answer really comes down to what moments you want to remember. If you choose one over the other, you'll still have beautiful memories of this season. But if documenting your baby's story from the very beginning is important to you, the two sessions complement each other wonderfully.
A Fresh 48 session preserves the very beginning. The hospital room, the tiny features, the first introductions, and the emotions of those earliest hours are all part of a chapter that passes incredibly quickly. A newborn session, on the other hand, captures the beginning of your family's life together at home. It's the quiet moments in the nursery, the way your baby fits into your arms, and the love that fills the spaces you've prepared for their arrival.
Fresh 48 captures the arrival. Newborn photography captures the beginning of life together.
When Should You Book Your Sessions?
Because babies rarely arrive exactly when expected, scheduling Fresh 48 photography looks a little different from booking a traditional session. I recommend reaching out during your pregnancy, ideally well before your due date, so your photographer can discuss availability, communication, and how scheduling will work once your baby arrives.
Since Fresh 48 sessions take place shortly after birth, flexibility is especially important. You'll want to communicate with your photographer when labor begins or when your baby arrives so they can coordinate the session around your recovery, your baby's needs, and any hospital requirements. Newborn sessions generally offer a little more flexibility. Depending on the style of photography you're looking for, your session may take place within the first several days or a few weeks after birth. For in-home lifestyle sessions, there's no need to have an elaborate setup or a perfectly decorated nursery. The focus is on your family and the moments you're sharing together, not whether every corner of your home looks picture-perfect.
Most importantly, your comfort and your baby's well-being should always come first. Sessions can be planned around feeding, rest, and whatever your family needs during this transition.
Documenting Your Growing Story
One of the most beautiful things about maternity, Fresh 48, and newborn photography is how each session preserves a different chapter of the same journey. Your maternity session celebrates the anticipation of meeting your baby. Your Fresh 48 session captures those first hours together. And your newborn session documents the beginning of everyday life as your family grows.
At 31:13 Photography, I offer a Growing Story Collection designed to bring these experiences together. From maternity portraits to the earliest moments following your baby's arrival and your first family photographs at home, this collection allows your story to be documented with consistency, intention, and care. Whether you're interested in a Fresh 48 session, an in-home newborn session, or documenting the entire journey, my goal is to preserve the moments you'll want to return to long after this season has passed.
Rooted in purpose. Created with intention.
